The Materials Engineering Department at the College of Engineering at Al-Qadisiyah University held a scientific workshop titled “Failure of Engineering Materials Due to Fatigue” in the Continuous Education Unit, presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Abdul Razzaq.
The workshop aimed to educate attendees and fourth-year students about fatigue, its causes, and how to prevent it by following engineering methods.
The workshop clarified that in materials science, fatigue refers to the “wear” that occurs in engineering materials, which begins with the propagation of cracks in a material for several reasons, including excessive cyclic loading at a specific point, rust, incorrect sample composition, high temperatures, forming processes, material structure, and incorrect material selection. The failure and collapse of a material due to crack growth can be divided into two types: sudden failure or slow failure, which leads to costly economic consequences manifested in production disruption.
