The Civil Engineering Department at the College of Engineering at Al-Qadisiyah University organized a scientific course titled “Medical Waste in Diwaniya Hospitals and Its Environmental Impacts” in the Continuing Education Unit hall, presented by Eng. Walaa Mohammed Hamza and Eng. Fatin Fahim Aziz.
The course aimed to identify medical waste, its sources, and types in general, particularly in the city of Diwaniya, as well as the local methods used for its disposal and to emphasize the environmental risks resulting from it.
The course included an explanation of solid waste and clarified the percentages of waste generated by Al-Diwaniya Teaching Hospital, the Maternity and Pediatric Hospital, and Al-Hussein Hospital based on previous studies. It indicated that the highest percentage of waste is produced by Al-Diwaniya Teaching Hospital, accounting for about 60% of the total medical waste in the city. The course also showed that the methods used for storing, separating, and incinerating waste are unhealthy and contribute to the spread of diseases and air pollution.
