Professor Dr. Jaafar Hamza Al-Jawdhari, a faculty member at the College of Archaeology at Al-Qadisiyah University, published a research paper entitled “The Drought of Oases in the Western Desert and its Impact on Iraqi Cultural and Natural Heritage” in the American journal IEEE. The paper was co-authored with a team of researchers from British, Italian, and Swiss universities and research centers, as well as UNESCO. The research included a detailed presentation of the results of archaeological surveys and analysis of satellite images conducted in the Iraqi desert region, comparing the results with other regions such as the Sahara Desert in North Africa. It is worth noting that dozens of oases and springs in the Iraqi western desert have recently dried up due to the excessive consumption of groundwater and climate change. This drought has resulted in the disappearance of a heritage of irrigation, nomadic life, and trade that had existed for thousands of years.
