The doctoral dissertation, titled “Molecular Characterization and Multisite Sequencing of Antibiotic-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae Isolated from Urinary Tract Infections in Babylon Governorate,” was discussed in the Department of Life Sciences at the College of Education, Al-Qadisiyah University. The dissertation was presented by researcher Rehab Dawas Jaber and supervised by Professor Dr. Mithal Karim Abbas. The dissertation aimed to isolate and identify K. pneumoniae bacteria isolated from urinary tract infection samples from women in Babylon Governorate using traditional methods and modern techniques (API 20E, ViTEK). The most important conclusion was that the isolation and identification results showed a high percentage (87.2%) of women infected with K. pneumoniae. The results of the susceptibility testing showed a high rate of resistance to beta-lactam and cephalosporin antibiotics.
The most important recommendations are to rationalize the use of antibiotics and rely on susceptibility testing results before prescribing treatment to limit the spread of resistant strains. Regular surveys of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates in women should be conducted to monitor any changes in antibiotic resistance and to detect resistant strains early.
