Under the patronage of the President of Al-Qadisiyah University, Professor Dr. Rahi Kalaf Mahdi Al-Yasiri, and the supervision of the Dean of the College of Arts, Professor Dr. Nabil Omran Al-Khalidi, and on the occasion of National Afforestation Day, the Afforestation Unit, in cooperation with the Department of Geography at the College of Arts, held a workshop entitled “The Role of Afforestation in Climate Adaptation in Desert Cities.” The workshop was presented by Professor Dr. Hussein Ali Abdul Hussein.

The workshop aimed to highlight the climatic and environmental role of trees in regulating thermal balance within cities and reducing the severity of the urban heat island phenomenon resulting from urban expansion and the scarcity of vegetation cover. Among the most important recommendations was that urban afforestation represents one of the most important tools for sustainable climate adaptation in desert cities due to its ability to reorganize the energy budget in the urban environment, improve air quality, and reduce thermal pollution. Furthermore, it plays a role in promoting environmental sustainability and raising the quality of life for residents. The workshop also emphasized the necessity of expanding urban afforestation programs and integrating them into urban and climate planning for arid cities, considering them an environmental structure capable of supporting local climate balance.
