Assistant Lecturer Hussein Abdul Hamid Jawad, from the College of Agriculture at Al-Qadisiyah University, published a scientific paper titled “Groundwater in Irrigated Soils and Wheat Plants in Some Areas of Central Iraq” in the internationally ranked journal Applied Chemical Engineering (2025), Volume 8, Issue 4.
The research addressed the effect of the transfer of heavy metals—lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and nickel (Ni)—from surface and groundwater sources to the soil and agricultural crops, focusing on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in central Iraq, specifically in Babylon Governorate.
The results showed that river water contained high concentrations of lead and copper exceeding the safe limits set by the World Health Organization, while the concentrations of these metals in well water were very low. Wheat grown with surface irrigation water also showed a higher concentration of minerals compared to wheat irrigated with well water; however, the mineral levels in the grains remained within the limits permitted for human consumption.
