Dr. Ola Mazen Makki and Mr. Majid Abdul-Muhammad, both faculty members at the College of Engineering, Al-Qadisiyah University, published a joint scientific paper titled “The Effect of Porous Soil on the Resistance of Concrete Slabs” in the reputable international journal, Review of Engineering and Technology Sciences. The research aimed to determine the behavior of reinforced concrete beams when supported on gypsum-rich sandy soil containing voids resulting from gypsum dissolution, and the extent to which the horizontality or verticality, shape, and size of these voids affect the resistance of the concrete slabs built upon them.
The study concluded that circular voids pose the least risk to the resistance of the concrete slabs. Furthermore, the effect diminishes as the voids extend further from the soil surface, and their impact diminishes as their depth increases. It is worth noting that Review of Engineering and Technology Sciences has a CiteScore of 1.1 and is indexed in Scopus Q4.
