Under the patronage of the President of Al-Qadisiyah University, Professor Dr. Rahi Kalaf Mahdi Al-Yasiri, and the supervision of the Dean of the College of Law, Professor Dr. Nizam Jabbar Talib, the Women’s Affairs Unit, in cooperation with the Rehabilitation and Employment Unit at the College of Law, Al-Qadisiyah University, held a scientific symposium entitled “University and Society: A Partnership in Building Awareness and National Development.” The symposium featured a presentation by Assistant Professor Dr. Sundus Mohammed Abbas and M.M. Baidaa Khudair Abbas
The seminar aimed to shed light on the legal framework governing women’s rights and duties, demonstrate the extent to which national legislation aligns with relevant international conventions, analyze cultural and social representations of women’s roles, and illustrate the impact of customs and traditions on supporting or limiting their participation, particularly by promoting societal dialogue on the necessity of empowering women in educational, economic, and political spheres.
The seminar concluded that there is a clear gap between legal texts guaranteeing women’s rights and their actual implementation in some environments, and that traditional stereotypes continue to limit women’s participation in decision-making positions. It also highlighted the need for ongoing awareness programs that link legal awareness with societal culture. Change cannot be achieved through legislation alone, and empowering women positively impacts comprehensive development, contributing to raising the level of social and economic well-being.
The symposium recommended intensifying educational campaigns that explain women’s legal rights in simplified terms suitable for different segments of society, integrating the concepts of equality and women’s empowerment into school curricula and educational activities, and training government employees on the fair and effective application of legal texts related to women’s rights, particularly supporting community initiatives that highlight successful female role models.
