The Department of Roads and Transportation Engineering at the College of Engineering, Al-Qadisiyah University, held a scientific workshop entitled “Burj Khalifa: A Structural and Engineering Perspective” in the Continuing Education Unit Hall at the college. The workshop was presented by Assistant Lecturer Rand Mohammed Jassim.

The workshop addressed the engineering challenges faced by the project team, most notably soil weakness: the soil was unsuitable for supporting a tower exceeding 800 meters in height. Other challenges included karst formations: the presence of dissolved pockets or cavities in the gypsum rock beneath the soil surface due to groundwater. Finally, the workshop addressed the risk of erosion: the saturation of the soil with saline water, which threatens the concrete and reinforcing steel with corrosion. Differential settlement: caused by the heterogeneity of the soil and rock beneath the foundations
