As part of a program to develop the research skills of postgraduate students, the College of Law at Al-Qadisiyah University organized a specialized scientific workshop entitled “Identifying and Formulating the Research Gap: The Art of Transforming a Problem into an Original Research Question.” The workshop was presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Hussein Naama Nughaimish and moderated by Dr. [Name Missing]. Ali Hamza Jabr
The workshop aimed to empower researchers to accurately identify gaps: teaching critical literature review mechanisms to uncover research gaps not addressed by previous studies; developing the skill of transforming a broad legal problem into an original research question that represents a qualitative addition to legal knowledge; practicing the clear, precise, and scientifically enriching formulation of research questions that reflect the study’s content; and understanding the organic relationship between the research gap, research objectives, and proposed methodology.
The workshop concluded that the fundamental finding is that a research gap is not a lack of references, but rather a legitimate question that has not yet been answered, or a contradiction in results that requires explanation. Furthermore, reading should go beyond mere summarization to critical analysis that compares the methodologies, results, and scope of similar studies.
The workshop recommended training graduate students in creating structured matrices to classify previous literature and identify points of overlap and divergence, and holding periodic specialized workshops focusing on different types of research gaps (theoretical, applied, etc.). Methodology
