Under the patronage of Professor Dr. Rahi Kalf Mahdi Al-Yasiri, President of Al-Qadisiyah University, and under the supervision of Professor Dr. Aqil Rahim Al-Barqawi, Dean of the College of Medicine, and in cooperation with the Chemical, Biological, and Radiation Safety and Security Division at the University Presidency, a scientific workshop was held in Ibn Al-Bitar Hall in the College of Medicine entitled “The Effects of Smoking on Children’s Health: Approaches and Preventive Strategies.” Assistant Professor Dr. Susan Sabbar Mutlaq lectured.
The workshop aimed to introduce the concept of smoking and its general health effects, and to clarify the risks of direct and passive smoking on children’s health. It also outlined the most common diseases associated with passive smoking in children (such as asthma, respiratory infections, ear infections, and slow growth).
The workshop recommended banning smoking in homes and enclosed spaces where children are present, educating parents about the dangers of passive smoking to their children’s health, enacting laws and regulations prohibiting smoking in public places, schools, and kindergartens, encouraging smoking cessation through awareness programs and psychological and health support for smokers, and incorporating the topic of smoking and its harms into school curricula to increase student awareness from an early age
