As part of the program to develop graduate students’ research skills, the College of Law at Al-Qadisiyah University organized a specialized scientific workshop entitled “Introduction to Scientific Research Methods in Law: Their Nature and Characteristics.” The workshop was presented by the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Nizam Jabbar Talib, and moderated by Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Hamza Jabbar.

The workshop aimed to deepen master’s students’ understanding of scientific research methods in the legal field by explaining their nature, characteristics, and areas of application in academic studies. The workshop also focused on clarifying the methodological foundations that researchers must adhere to when choosing a research method, the controls that govern their use, and highlighting the specificities of each legal system according to the country and its affiliation with the Latin or Anglo-Saxon schools, and the impact this has had on shaping the methodology adopted in the study.

Main Conclusions: The workshop concluded that scientific research methods in law are not merely descriptive tools, but rather critical and analytical mechanisms aimed at enhancing the quality of the national legal foundation. This is achieved by leveraging comparative legislative experiences and drawing inspiration from what complements or addresses deficiencies in national texts, ensuring the development of the Iraqi legal system on solid scientific foundations.

The workshop recommended that researchers make a conscious scientific effort in selecting the appropriate methodology for their studies, while ensuring its consistency with the nature of the research topic and its objectives. She also stressed the importance of supporting legal research with factual, jurisprudential, and judicial evidence, which gives it evidential strength. This allows for the possibility of testing the success of the proposed recommendations when presented to the Iraqi legislator.
