Under the patronage of Professor Dr. Rahi Kalf Mahdi Al-Yasiri, President of Al-Qadisiyah University, and under the supervision of Professor Dr. Munir Abdul Amir Abdul Fatlawi, Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, the Microbiology Department organized a workshop on micropollutants and their environmental effects. Assistant Professor Dr. Alia Abdul Hussein Karim lectured.
The workshop aimed to highlight the impact of micropollutants (such as drug residues, pesticides, and microplastics) on environmental microorganisms, study changes in their composition and function resulting from exposure to these pollutants, and examine their role in the biodegradation or accumulation of these substances in environmental chains.
The workshop recommended the need to monitor changes in microbial communities resulting from exposure to micropollutants. It also emphasized the importance of promoting the use of microorganisms in bioremediation techniques, given their ability to naturally decompose or remove some pollutants. The workshop encourages the integration of microbiology studies into environmental impact assessments of any fine pollutant sources to ensure sustainable environmental management.
