The Human Rights Unit, in cooperation with the Media Division at the College of Engineering at Al-Qadisiyah University, organized an awareness workshop entitled “Building a Safer Society: The Role of Education in Combating Terrorism and Intellectual Extremism.” The workshop was held in the Continuing Education Hall. Ms. Nadia Kazim Awad and Ms. Ban Hamid Jassim gave lectures. The workshop aimed to explain the role played by educational institutions in combating extremism and intellectual terrorism, particularly with regard to immunization and prevention of extremist ideas and terrorism. The workshop also demonstrated that educational institutions occupy an advanced position within the comprehensive strategy adopted by the state to combat extremism and terrorism. This is not only because they play a key role in immunizing students from an early age against extremist ideology and terrorism, but also because they cooperate with other societal institutions—the family, the media, civil society, and the private sector—to combat intellectual extremism and terrorism, in a manner that reinforces government efforts in this regard. It is worth noting that posters opposing terrorism and intellectual extremism were posted throughout the college.
