The Department of Chemical Engineering at the College of Engineering at Al-Qadisiyah University organized a scientific course titled “Methods for Treating Radioactive Waste” in the Continuing Education Unit hall, presented by Prof. Dr. Hassan Isa Dawood and Dr. Ali Khudhair Jabar.
The course aimed to identify the fundamental methods for treating and disposing of radioactive waste generated from various human activities in order to protect humans and reduce its danger to the environment. The course also reviewed different sources of radioactive pollutants, the classification of radioactive materials, the health risks of radioactive waste, and the basic methods for disposing of radioactive waste.
The course recommended emphasizing the implementation of strict procedures in areas exposed to radioactive contamination, to eliminate or minimize the risks arising from exposure to radiation or radioactive materials. It also suggested identifying suitable locations for collecting radioactive waste (according to activity and radioactive lifespan) with continuous monitoring by specialized staff, as well as raising awareness about the dangers of nuclear waste.
