The Department of Public Law at the College of Law at Al-Qadisiyah University held a scientific symposium entitled “The Impact of Water Scarcity on Economic and Social Development,” presented by Asst. Prof. Dr. Osama Sabri Muhammad and Asst. M.M. Haider Obaid Hadabi.
The symposium aimed to shed light on the impact of water scarcity on economic and social development, highlight the challenges facing communities due to scarce water resources, and discuss sustainable solutions for water conservation and enhancing water efficiency in various sectors.
The symposium concluded that water scarcity has a profound impact: Water scarcity negatively impacts economic development, leading to a decline in agricultural and industrial production, which impacts economic growth rates and job opportunities. It also has social repercussions: Water scarcity impacts quality of life and public health, and increases the likelihood of conflicts between communities due to competition for resources.
The symposium recommended raising community awareness of the importance of rationalizing freshwater consumption, developing modern technologies for desalination and reuse, supporting policies that encourage sustainable water resource management, and enhancing regional and international cooperation to address the challenges of water scarcity.
