The Materials Engineering Department at the College of Engineering at Al-Qadisiyah University organized a scientific workshop titled “Smart Materials and Their Most Important Engineering Applications” in the Continuing Education Unit hall, presented by Dr. Saleh Jawad Hamza.

The workshop aimed to highlight the importance of smart materials and their key engineering applications in various fields. The workshop also clarified the existence of different types of smart materials, including the following:

– **Piezoelectric materials**: These can convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice versa. For example, they change shape in response to an electric pulse or generate an electric charge in response to applied mechanical pressure.

– **Shape memory materials**: These materials have the ability to change shape and return to their original shape when exposed to a heat source, among other stimuli. The basic principle behind shape memory materials is a change in the solid-state phase of these materials, which switch between austenite and martensite states.

– **Chromo-active materials**: These are materials that change color when exposed to certain changes in temperature, light, pressure, etc. These materials are currently used in a wide range of sectors.

– **Active optical materials**: There are several types: photovoltaic materials emit light when fed with electrical pulses, fluorescent materials reflect light with greater intensity, and phosphorescent materials can emit light after the initial source has stopped.
