In order to develop a proactive roadmap to address the genetic threats posed by the Bundibugyo Ebola virus, and within the framework of international scientific efforts to contain the outbreak of Bundibugyo Ebola virus (scientifically known as Bundibugyo ebolavirus) in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Professor Dr. Mohammed Abdul Wahab Al-Askari, Dean of the College of Biotechnology at Al-Qadisiyah University and an expert with the World Health Organization, participated in a high-level specialized symposium organized by the WHO EPI-WIN Network, with broad scientific participation from international specialists.
Dr. Al-Askari’s participation, given his extensive record of research contributions to international agency discussions since the COVID-19 pandemic, underscores his active role within the World Health Organization and his ongoing contributions to anticipating biological risks. He presented a detailed analytical overview of the dynamics of the virus’s cross-border spread, warning that current epidemiological trajectories in affected areas necessitate international coordination that goes beyond traditional monitoring mechanisms, due to the high population density and commercial activity in those regions.
On the genomic research front, Dr. Al-Askari reviewed predictions regarding the virus’s genetic mutations, explaining that emerging changes in the genetic structure of Bundibugyo ebolavirus are a crucial indicator requiring real-time monitoring. He emphasized the importance of understanding how the virus adapts to the human host, stressing that “continuous genetic sequencing” combined with artificial intelligence algorithms are the most effective tools available today for developing accurate diagnoses and more efficient medical treatment.
