The Public Law Department at the College of Law, Al-Qadisiyah University, held a scientific seminar entitled “The Culture of Publishing and the Danger of Imitating Suicide in the Digital Age.” The seminar was presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Sundus Muhammad Abbas and Assistant Lecturer [Name Missing]. Haneen Zghair Hassan

The workshop aimed to highlight the impact of digital media on shaping public awareness regarding suicide issues, clarify the dangers of irresponsible coverage that could lead to a “suicide contagion” or its imitation, and promote a culture of ethical publishing among content creators and media professionals.

Key findings: Excessive or detailed coverage of suicide cases in digital media may contribute to normalizing the idea among vulnerable groups. The absence of professional standards in publishing increases the likelihood of imitating behavior, especially among young people. Rapidly spreading digital content amplifies its impact compared to traditional media.

Key recommendations: Adherence to safe publishing guidelines when addressing suicide issues, such as avoiding details and specific methods, focusing on messages of hope and psychological support instead of sensationalizing the event, training media professionals and content creators in responsible coverage, and strengthening the role of health and mental health institutions in providing alternative awareness content.
