The Human Rights Unit at the College of Biotechnology, Al-Qadisiyah University, held a scientific seminar entitled “Poverty and its Impact on Human Dignity and Rights.” The speakers were:
– Lecturer Salwan Abdul Mueen
– Lecturer Amjad Ali Abdul Ridha
The seminar aimed to highlight the phenomenon of poverty as a social and economic challenge that affects human dignity and fundamental rights, and to demonstrate its impact on undermining human rights as stipulated in international conventions, most notably the Universal Declaration of Human Rights issued by the United Nations. It also discussed ways to address the issue from a developmental and human rights perspective.
The symposium concluded that poverty is not merely a lack of income, but a complex state of deprivation that affects human dignity and the right to education, health, work, and a decent life. Therefore, combating poverty requires comprehensive policies that achieve social justice, guarantee the protection of fundamental rights, and promote the principle of equal opportunity in society.
