Under the patronage of the President of Al-Qadisiyah University, Professor Dr. Rahi Kalaf Mahdi Al-Yassiri, and in the presence of the Vice President for Scientific Affairs, Professor Dr. Sattar Al-Fatlawi, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Archaeology, Professor Dr. Rajwan Faisal Al-Mayali, the College of Archaeology held a workshop entitled “Preliminary Results of the Babylonian Rural Settlements Project.” The workshop was presented by Dr. Bernhard Schneider from the Center for Ancient World Studies at the University of Wrocław, Poland.
The workshop included a detailed explanation of the Babylonian rural areas, which refer to human settlements located outside the boundaries of cities, capitals, and large villages in southern Mesopotamia during the Babylonian period. These settlements, which were usually relatively small, extended along irrigation canals and rivers. They included dwellings built of reeds or mud bricks, as well as larger buildings constructed of brick. These buildings were characterized by a lower architectural level in terms of decoration and organization, but they remained under the general influence of Babylonian culture and religion.
