Under the patronage of the President of Al-Qadisiyah University, Professor Dr. Rahi Kalaf Mahdi Al-Yasiri, and the supervision of the Dean of the College of Archaeology, Professor Dr. Rajwan Faisal Al-Mayali, the College of Archaeology organized a scientific workshop entitled “Routes of Stone Age Humans Passing Through Iraq.” A delegation from the University of Brussels in Belgium, represented by Dr. Ella Abergs and Dr. Stefan Smith, presented at the workshop. Dr. Andreas from the University of Cambridge, a researcher specializing in prehistoric studies, also participated in presenting the workshop.
A comprehensive scientific presentation was given on the routes of ancient humans, starting from their first migrations from Africa, passing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Sinai Desert, and reaching the Arabian Peninsula. The presentation highlighted the early human movements witnessed in these regions, in which Iraq played a significant role due to its geographical location, which formed a natural and environmental corridor for the passage and settlement of ancient humans. The workshop included an in-depth discussion of the diverse natural environments in Iraq and how the mountains, plains, and rivers contributed to guiding the movement of human groups over thousands of years, in addition to the study of stone tools. And the techniques used in their manufacture, revealing the technological and intellectual development of ancient humans.
At the conclusion of the workshop, a scientific discussion was held between the delegation from the University of Brussels and Dr. Andreas from the University of Cambridge and the Faculty of Archaeology regarding strengthening research cooperation between the two sides, particularly in the fields of studying ancient climate changes and research on Stone Age humans in Iraq, given the great importance of these studies in understanding the deep history of humanity.
