Under the patronage of the President of Al-Qadisiyah University, Professor Dr. Rahi Kalaf Mahdi Al-Yasiri, and the supervision of the Dean of the College of Dentistry, Professor Dr. Ali Hassan Ali Murad, the Continuing Education Unit at the College of Dentistry held a scientific seminar entitled “The Use of Coccolithophore Algae in Treating Tooth Decay.” The seminar was presented by Dr. Imad Jabbar, Dr. Amjad Kamel, Ms. Faten Abdul Sattar, and Ms. Rania Falah.
The seminar aimed to introduce the use of an enzyme from the microscopic marine algae (Coccolithophores) in treating tooth decay, focusing on its remineralization properties. It was explained that coccolithophore algae are microscopic organisms that produce calcium carbonate plaques (coccoliths). These calcareous plaques are chemically similar to the basic components of tooth enamel.
The symposium recommended conducting in vitro and in vivo studies to evaluate the ability of the powder extracted from these algae to promote the remineralization of damaged tooth enamel, to compare its effectiveness with conventional fluoride compounds, and to identify and extract the bioactive compounds.
